|Why the name “DownEast”?
The east part is easy - we are about as far east as you can go in
the United States.
The down part is a little trickier; after all, Maine is North of almost
everywhere in the US. Don’t you go “up” when you go north?
Well, “DownEast" is actually an old sailing term from back in the
days of the sailing schooners which carried lumber products from
this region. The prevailing wind was from the west. When the
schooners would make their return trip to Eastern Maine from
Boston or New York they would have to sail “Down” wind, and of
Hence, the coast of Maine came to be known as “DownEast”!
